Crawford’s book delivers the three payoffs its title promises: it is short, it is on viruses, and, most importantly, it is an excellent, comprehensive introduction to a fascinating topic. It is highly readable and understandable, and teaches why viruses are one of the most important biological and health topics to understand. Not only are viruses the world’s most abundant life form, they are also the cause of many illnesses for humans, but also for virtually all forms of life, including plants, bacteria and animals. With the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020, virology is once again in the news. This is a great book to use to get a grounding in all the basics, so you can understand why a virus that kills its host too quickly will not survive, or why a virus that has a “high reproduction rate” is highly infections. There is even a chapter on Epidemics and Pandemics… which is just what everyone is talking about in 2020. The book is written to be useful and easily digested, including an excellent glossary and list of suggested reading materials organized by topic. I highly recommend both this book, and it’s companion Microbiology — A Very Short Introduction by Nicholas P. Money, which I found useful to understand the bigger picture of how and where viruses fit into the larger realm of “microbes.”
